How to develop a great drum major style and do dynamics awesomely?

I want to try out for drum major this year but I am only a freshman. I need to be really good to beat out the seniors because my heart is set on being a drum major. I have 4/4 and 2/4 time down pat but what stomps me is 3/4 time and also the dynamics like crescendos and decrescendos. I want to develop a certain style and pizazz and be like the first sopre drum major!! Please please please help me out with tips and suggestions!
